Česká zbrojovka a.s. Uherský Brod (lit. "Czech Arsenal Uherský Brod"), more commonly known as CZ or CZUB, is a Czech firearms manufacturer.

History

CZ was founded in 1919 in the small town of Uherský Brod, initially producing inexpensive pistols. The company expanded from pistols to assault rifles and submachine guns in the years following. The company was privatized in 1993 as Česká zbrojovka a.s. Uherský Brod and has established itself in at least ninety countries and remains one of the biggest firearms manufacturers to this day. A subsidiary, CZ-USA was founded in 1997 and acts as the American arm of the Czech firearms manufacturer.

A similar company, ČZ a.s., was known for their manufacture of motorcycles; the company did originally produce firearms from its foundation in 1918 but firearms manufacture was taken over by CZUB in 1936. ČZ a.s. was well known for their production of motorcycles from that point, although the company ultimately went out of business in 1997 due to a failed venture from Italian motorcycle company Cagiva.^[1]

Trivia

• Some CZ firearms after World War II have BRNO markings; this is due to a mandate by a central agency that managed most Czechoslovakian firearms companies after World War II, requiring that all firearms that are due to be exported be stamped with BRNO markings.^[2]
