The RPG-2 is a Russian rocket launcher. It is considered the first successful weapon of its type.
History
The RPG-2 was started as a parallel project to the RPG-1, and was started in 1947 while the RPG-1 was still being developed. The RPG-2 was tested alongside the RPG-1, while the RPG-2 clearly turning out to be the superior weapon, causing all work on the RPG-1 to halt indefinitely. The design of the RPG-2 was later refined to become the RPG-7.
Design Details
The RPG-2 looks similar to later RPGs such as the RPG-4 and 7, but does not have the "bulge" in the launch tube seen on most RPGs, and only has one pistol grip.
Ammunition
The RPG-2 uses the PG-2 round, a 82mm shaped warhead. The round has a stated penetration capability in excess of 180 millimeters (7.09 inches) of all but the frontal armor of the heaviest tanks.
